Post-colonial readings of The Tempest were inspired by the decolonisation movements of the s and s in Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America. Jyotsna Singh describes how these readings challenge more traditional interpretations of the play, questioning Prospero's ownership of the island and rethinking the role of Caliban.   This is the second book by Andrew Matthews and Tony Ross that I have read on Shakespeare's plays as I also read their book on Twelfth Night. I personally enjoyed The Tempest over Twelfth Night and is currently my favourite Shakespeare play, even though I have only read two of them/5(31).

Before any of them can eat, a clap of thunder sounds and Ariel appears in the form of a harpy. A flap of Ariel's wings makes the banquet vanish. Saying that he is an agent of Fate, Ariel condemns Alonso, Antonio, and Sebastian for overthrowing and exiling Prospero and says that the tempest was nature's tool for exacting revenge on Alonso by taking Ferdinand.   Shakespeare and the Gods provides students with much needed information about major figures from classical mythology, the early modern interpretations that Shakespeare would have known, and the role allusions to these gods, or their appearance, play in enriching the moral and psychological meaning of his works. Virginia Mason Vaughan's Shakespeare and the Gods is a clear and .

In your essay, integrate the idea of protest with their uses of language and poetic technique. Shakespeare, Blake, Whitman, Dickinson, Frost, and Rich are all wonderful poets of their time. They all had a unique style of writing, and used writing as a way to communicate their feeling and bring awareness to some of the political, feminist. Forgiveness and freedom are the keynotes of the play. Prospero, the Duke of Milan, has been grievously wronged by his brother Antonio who was entrusted with the administration of his dukedom. Antonio conspired with Alonso, the King of Naples to dispossess Prospero. In return, Antonio bartered away the independence and sovereignty of Milan and agreed to pay an annual tribute to the King of Naples.
